The Wholesale Florist & Florist Supplier Association (WFFSA) joins the floral community in mourning the loss of Fernando “Fern” Ortega, a colleague, mentor, advocate and friend to so many. Fernando passed away on May 17, 2026, at the age of 45. Throughout his career in the floral industry, he was known for the energy, humor, loyalty and warmth he brought into every room he entered.
For those who knew him, Fernando was a familiar and welcomed presence. He showed up with enthusiasm, made people feel seen and brought a genuine love for the industry to every conversation and event he attended. His impact was felt through the relationships he built across companies, roles and generations of floral professionals.
“I’ve known Fernando since I was 17 years old, my whole life,” said Jesselyn Correa, who worked with Fernando at both Galleria and Jet Fresh over the course of 17 years. “He wasn’t just my boss. He was my friend and my brother. I’m heartbroken with his loss. But I know this isn’t goodbye forever, it’s I’ll miss you until we meet again.”
That sense of deep friendship and connection was echoed by so many who worked alongside Fernando, competed against him, learned from him and laughed with him.
“Fernando was just one of those guys that lit up a room with his presence, and he made it known in his own unique ways,” said Fredrick Melero, WFFSA President and Director of Sales and Procurement at Choice Farms. “He’s going to be greatly missed, but his impact will live on in this industry through all the friends he made through the years.”
Fernando’s influence extended far beyond any one company or role. He had a way of encouraging people, helping them find their footing and reminding them they belonged in this industry. Ryan Marrero, who worked with Fernando at both Galleria and Equiflor, remembered him as someone whose support continued through different seasons of his career.
“Fernando was not only a coworker and colleague but a great friend,” said Marrero. “Whether working together or as a competitor, his support and guidance meant a great deal to me. After stepping away from the industry for a few years to attend college, he was instrumental in helping me get back in and grow as a salesman and leader. He will be remembered for his kindness, encouragement and the positive impact he had on those around him.”
Fernando was also a loyal WFFSA member and an advocate for the floral community. He brought his unmistakable energy and enthusiasm to industry events, relationships and the people he cared about.
To WFFSA, Fernando will be remembered as someone who brought life, laughter, and heart into the spaces he entered. His loss is deeply felt across the industry, but his legacy will continue through the many people he supported, encouraged and called friends.
On behalf of WFFSA, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Fernando’s family, friends, colleagues and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
